Kapa Haka 2016 – Newsletter
The Ashley School kapa haka group this year has almost 100 students ranging from Year 1 to Year 8. We are most fortunate to have Matua Maaka Tau as our tutor again in 2016. He has the ability to get the absolute best from our students through his positive attitude and through the rigour which he applies to every Monday morning session between 9.30 am and 10.30am. We are delighted to have whanau come along and attend the weekly kapa haka sessions in the hall, where you can join in and learn the waiata which the children are doing. Come along when you are able.
This year, our group has been accepted to participate in the Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural Festival which is held annually in the city at the end of August, beginning of September. This is the 34th year that the festival has been on in Christchurch, and it is a huge event at which 70 schools participate over a week of performances. We have elected to perform in one of the evening shows at Horncastle Arena and will have plenty of information about this as the time approaches.
So far we know that our performance will be on Wednesday 31 August at the 6.45pm show. We expect all of the group members to be there on the night. Tickets will be on sale some time in the future for families to come along and support our school.
In the meantime, we are conscious of the fact that our large group will need to be clothed for this event as well as other occasions both at our school and outside it. To this end, we plan to organise a few sewing bees in the hall, to get our school kapa haka costumes made.
If you are able to help with cutting out, sewing, pressing, making cups of tea to sustain, then please let Chris Meehan know by emailing at c.meehan@ashley.school.nz
If there are any problems or questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
