KAPA HAKA 2018

Here we are back again into another great year for our kapa haka group. We have Matua Maaka and Matua Norm working with our students again and this year our group is just over 80 strong. A factor this year is the wonderful sound and passion that is coming from our senior boys. This is a real treat and something to look forward to. We will be involved in the Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural festival again, to be held at the Horncastle Arena between 3rd and 7th September.

The theme for this years festival is ‘ Whiria te tangata‘ – Weaving people together.

Here is our new school karakia for 2018. It has a wonderful message.

Tukua te wairua kia rere ki ngā taumata
Hai ārahi i ā tātou mahi
Me tā tātou whai i ngā tikanga a rātou mā
Kia mau kia ita
Kia kore ai e ngaro
Kia pupuri
Kia whakamaua
Kia tina! TINA! Hui e! TĀIKI E!

The meaning of this karakia is =

Allow one’s spirit to exercise its potential

To guide us in our work as well as in our pursuit of our ancestral traditions

Take hold and preserve it
Ensure it is never lost
Hold fast.
Secure it.
Draw together! Affirm!

WAIATA TIRA – TAHU POTIKI

This is a beautiful song about the great Ngai Tahu ancestor, Tahu Potiki. All of the major lines of descent in Ngai Tahu, come from Tahu Potiki. This version is sung by the Crofts sisters from Tuahiwi.

Tahupotiki taku tupuna

Hoki wairua mai arohaina e

Ki o uri e karanga ake ra

Aratakina to iwi aue

Aoraki te maunga ariki

Hei whakamaru te iwi kei raro

Takitimu waka whakairo

Hoea hoea ra te moana

Aue e koro e

Hei whakamanaha kore rawa koe e warewaretia

Huakina mai ra ki o tamariki

Nga tikanga o nga matua tipuna

Aoraki te maunga ariki

Hei whakamaru te iwi kei raro

Takitimu waka whakairo

Hoea hoea ra te moana

Maranga mai

Kapa Haka 2017

Here we are back again ready for another huge year with our Ashley School kapa haka group.

Our group began in early February with just over 80 students ranging right across the school from Year 1 to Year 8. It is great to have our tutors Matua Maaka, Matua Norm and Whaea Michelle coming back in to school to work with us each Monday morning between 9.30am and 10.30am. If you would like to come and learn a waiata or see how our group works, you are most welcome to come and visit.

This year we have again committed to being a part of the Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural Festival which is going to be held between the 14th and 18th of August at the Horncastle Arena. Maaka has already started work with us on our programme for the festival, which sounds fabulous. Some great waiata and a new haka.
